Why Ten

Ten Fruits?  Why ten and not thirteen, sixteen, or twenty?

When I think of Jesus producing fruits in a believer’s life I am reminded of the basic character qualities Paul wrote in the book of Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…”   Jesus uses the Holy Spirit’s power to produce these fruits. This is a short list of nine.

The tenth fruit is being a verbal witness of your faith. Jesus told his disciples and followers, “… you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…”  Acts 1:8   Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:20: “So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, ‘Come back to God!’”

Are there more than ten spiritual fruits in the Christian life?  Of course.

Colossians 3:12-17 lists compassion, humility, forgiveness and thankfulness.  Philippians 4 mentions being considerate, praying and giving generously.  My desire is that the power of the Holy Spirit would produce these basic ten fruits in my life so that I will give the glory back to Jesus the Vine.

Are you connected to Jesus, the Vine?  What are some fruits that God is producing in your life? I would enjoy hearing from you.
